I agree completely. Taking away things you're used to having and making you pay for them is a stupid business decision IMO.
Not
entirely
Graphisoft's decision:

Apple support is pretty unprofessional in their documentation of the termination of QTVR development. This article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21662?viewlocale=en_US
shows a modified date of July 2011, but the content is ancient - noting that the QT VR dev tools were for PPC and not noting that they are no longer available. It even contains a link to a QT VR page that no longer exists. Nice.
In any case, the future ... well, actually, the present ... of VR panos and VR objects is HTML 5. Here's an Apple page illustrating an HTML5 VR ... obviously requires a newer browser capable of HTML5:

Better than QT, in the sense that nobody, even on a handheld, has to download any software because it is all built into any current browser.
It just takes resources (and perhaps large firms demanding it from their reseller) for Graphisoft to make this happen.
Those of us with Artlantis (etc) are happy enough, but either Artlantis or BIMx carry hefty price tags for something that used to be included, as you say.
Cheers,
Karl
