hi all,

i have been asked by my employer to spec a new pc for myself to run archicad/lightworks, photoshop cs, illustrator, sketchup etc etc....

can i ask the forum to offer me some direction on this?

i know a number of you folks out there don't 'approve' of us humble pc'ers - but beggars can't be choosers!!! : )

you assistance is greatly appreciated!

I have checked the new iMac with 24'' hast the following graphic card:

ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory

That means, with ATI Radeon with 256MB must be enough to use 24'' display.
It will be adequate for your needs, but it is a still a slow card compared to a decent higher spec one for anything that is graphicly intensive. Several people have also had graphical problems too with that particular card.

There are plenty of 256Mb cards out there that would be better (HD3850 for example) if you had the choice. The GPU and memory speeds are a better guide to performance than memory quantity. Have a look here to see the relative performance levels. Highlighted in blue are the two cards in question -

I buy usually graphic card from old modell (In this case I plan to buy Ati Fire GL X2 256MB)
The Ati FireGL X2 256MB card you were interested in is a 5 year old design based on the ATI 9800 card. It is AGP only. It will be even slower then the one in the iMac. Personally I would not touch it, let alone pay money for it. Expect fairly poor performance on a 24" monitor!

Amazingly though, the minimum graphics card size recommended for ArchiCAD 11 is only 64MB! I'd love to see how that runs!

@Peter
Thanks for your advice. I will consider again.
My Comp. has just AGP.
I must see the HD 3850 for AGP.
Ati Fire GL was at that time for CAD-using very popular.

for what it will cost to KEEP the motherboard with that AGP ancient relic slot, you could get a dual or even quad core, new mobo and a top vunderbar Gf 7950 GTX 256-512mb ddr3 and miss nothing the top dog computers are doing, even in SLI. Heck get two 7900 GTXs with 256 ddr3 (faster than 512mb ddr2 in almost all the 8600 and lower variants, and even half the 8700s- it's as fast as the 8700's too)...

I'm using a laptop with a t7400, 4gb ddr2, gf 7900 GO 256mb ddr3 an a full-screen 3d window (1920x1200) most of the time for my editing and flying -exploring the models, without any issues =3000 square meter high GDL object 10 story buildings with many windows and scenary (but no trees- exterior polys are minimal).

On the desktop I've a DFI lanparty NF4 SLI, AMD a64x2 4400 socket 939 (2.4hgz stock?) and some SATA western digital 320gb drives, running two 7900 GT KO's 256mb ddr3 and they are smooth as heck and I can run 3dsmax, movies, edit music and listen to it, multi-task (I'm rendering on both right now while I browse and listen to music, but assign your tasks to the proper cores!!!)....

Upgrade that ancient mobo ASAP. Even if the AGP is only 50 EU you're wasting money; an entry level dual-core and PCI-e 7900 will ROCK it for just a few deutschmarks more!!!!!

p.s. use the AGP rig for a file server, for rendering while you work.
YEAH!!!!

Remember,
Back when Fire GL was FAST was when AC wasn't hardly known in the "civilized" (I.E. hardware developers or college courses on 3d modeling) world.

Fire GL works great in 3dsMax and Maya, which use sophisticated 3d methods that ATI took advantage of to appeal to the 3d market. 2d CAD will run on an ancient 32mb PCI rage-pro: it needs nothing.

AC still uses old school slow OpenGL, un-enhanced. Even if they switch to Dx10+ sometime, those Gf 7900 series will do about 95% of the 8k's and 9k series today, so you'll get YEARS of fun and use out of them for very cheap.

That fire GL won't please you in AC, so only get it if you're doing a lot of Maya or 3dsMAX, old school style.
