Graphic Override for skin types

Barry Kelly

It has often been asked that we can use Graphic Overrides to modify just one skin in a wall rather than the entire composite.
It seems that is not possible for the moment at least.

However I think it would be a good alternative to have a GO for the skin type - core, other, finish.

We can already control these by Partial Structure Display - turning the entire skin on or off as needed.
So what about having an option in the GO to override the view of these skins?

Is there any news on this? I could really use this at the moment. Or better, had expected it to work as different skins are indeed detectable for the Partial Structure Display.

I plan on using it to check my BIM model, especially the core component of my exterior walls and the outer wall skin (bricks or cladding).

Sorry I must have missed your question.
No there has been no change to GO working with partial elements (wall skins).
Nor have I heard anything about this changing any time soon.

Bump.

This is an old post, but I think it is a good one to vote for.

There may be another wish for this as well.

If this wish gets enough votes, maybe they can be merged in the top 100 selection in a few days.

Bump for this. I think it's time Graphisoft actually starts listening to good suggestions.

Bump for this. I regularly come across this issue, typically when doing an extension on a house and I want to remove the old timber cladding from the wall frame and replace it with plasterboard. I'm yet to find a convincing way to efficiently model this that still looks good in drawings.

Currently, Graphic Overrides in Archicad apply to the entire building element (e.g. a whole wall or slab), without the ability to distinguish between individual skins within a composite. This significantly limits the clarity and flexibility of construction drawings, especially in detailed plans intended for contractors.

For example, I often want to visually distinguish specific finishing layers such as thick plaster layers, highlighted in green and water-resistant plaster layer highlighted in blue.

At the moment, this is not possible. Applying a Graphic Override to a composite wall colors or overrides the entire structure uniformly, rather than allowing for skin-specific visualization. This becomes problematic in cases where a single wall has multiple relevant layers that need to be distinguished—for instance, an interior partition with a different plaster finish on each side.

(now i need to make for a drawing like this a different penset so the colors only show up in that specific penset, and are black in the regular penset)

The current limitation creates several issues. It reduces visual clarity, as all layers appear uniform. It prevents clear communication of layer-specific properties like finishes or insulation. It also forces the use of inefficient workarounds such as 2D overlays or duplicated elements.

SO...

I would like to request the ability to apply Graphic Overrides to individual skins within composite structures and complex profiles. Ideally, this would mean that:

  • Each skin within a composite can be assigned its own override rule, based on criteria such as Building Material or other properties;

  • The override would affect only that specific skin and could control attributes such as fill, line type, pen color, and surface material;

  • This functionality should be supported in both floor plans and sections.

Implementing this feature would significantly improve the precision and clarity of construction documentation and would enable more accurate and informative graphical communication directly from the BIM model.

Similar wish already exists here.

Yours is extending it for few more ideas. Probably good to merge these wishes by moderator?
