MaterialX Format support

What is MaterialX?
MaterialX aims to provide a platform-independent way to define and share material data, allowing artists to create a material in one application and use it in another, or even render it on different renderers, without losing the visual appearance or editability. MaterialX is a Format, not a programm/application. Check out the official MaterialX Website.

Purpose?

It would enable companies that provide content in form of 3D Models to attach MaterialX Materials to those 3D Models and ensure that their color and textures are displayed correctly, no matter the application or product. So it enables us to create consistent looks across applications and renderers.

It would also enable project participants within an openBim workflow to have one common MaterialX File, which would then ensure that all incoming 3D Modells will have the correct representation (Color, Texture) within a 3D Software. So having one MaterialX File which can be imported into Archicad, Revit, Allplan, Vectorworks, Solibri, etc.. (asuming they will support the MaterialX Standard)

Summary:

So to summarize it, MaterialX would enable Archicad to:

  • import and export MaterialX files
  • display those Materials correctly within the 3D Viewport (Color, Textures)
  • render those Materials within the Archicad visualizer
  • guarantee that exported 3D Models would look and feel (Color, Textures) exactly the same like in Archicad (Project collaboration)
  • guarantee that imported 3D Models would look and feel (Color, Textures) exactly the same like in from the exported-Software

What is the wish here?

Are you simply wanting Archicad to interact with this MaterialX program?

Barry.

Hi Barry!

I´ll try to expand on this wish to clarify what exactly I would like to see implemented within Archicad.

MaterialX is not a programm/application. It is an open standard for representing rich material and look-development content in computer graphics, enabling its platform-independent description and exchange across applications and renderers. This means it enables exporting/importing MaterialX files in different applications that can then use those materials for rendering/visualization or just displaying the Materials in a 3D View (Archciad 3D View for Modelling for example)

It would enable companies that provide content in form of 3D Models to attach MaterialX Materials to those 3D Models and ensure that their color and textures are displayed correctly, no matter the application or product.

Thanks,

So the wish is you would like Archicad to support the MaterialX format.

I should have read the title of your post better. 🙄

Barry.

Yes, exactly! I will add the link and the better description to the wish itself, thanks Eduardo and Barry!
