Define path to external content by variable

Hello group,

I don't know if this has been dealt with but my googling hasn't shown any relevant results... the question:

Is it possible to define a variable to store the path to external drawings so that when you connect to a bimserver project you can load external content locally without having to have the same path in all computers?

I'm thinking of something along the line of PROJECTNAME variable in autocad or project configuration in Microstation. This let's you define the URL to external content locally so if you have local copies of xref files it points to them...
This way one can have all xref'd drawings synced with owncloud, dropbox or similar, and not stored within the bimserver project...
