I am getting to know the workflow for ArchiCAD and I am wondering what the best way is to set up door and window schedules? I was very excited initially about the parametric aspects of ArchiCAD and BIM modeling. I thought it was very cool how you could place a window in plan and how it automated to show in elevation, etc. But as I look at the door and window schedules now I don't see any room location or specifics as far as the window function - i.e. if it's a casement, awning, etc. - they;re also not showing the room location. I set up zones and named them all...am I doing something wrong? I would like to be able to show the following:
Room names/location for doors and windows
Distinguish which doors and windows are new and which are existing (right now all the existing D&W are showing up o the schedules which isn't necessary
Have the type of window/function indicated on the schedule
Thanks very much - I do mostly residential architecture so if there is a better way or more residential specific way please let me know...thank you!
All the things you want are achievable, but you need to learn what "Scheme Settings" will give the required output.
If you have sorted the scheme setting and some elements are missing then it may be the method you have used for the zone creation. Walls and zones need to be in contact to be make a connection in the schedule such as location for doors & windows.

Thank you DG I will review the items in the link you sent. I was able to figure out the QTY and Function criteria from Scheme Settings. It will still not show the room location though even when I put in "Zone" as a criteria. I've created the Zones using the zone tool and the black hammer and it appears to select the interior outline of the room just fine. When you say "walls and zones need to be in contact with each other" I was assuming when I used the hammer to create the zones it picked up the walls as well but I'm not sure? The door schedule had no problem picking up the rooms names on the door schedule...strange. I'll read through everything and see if I can make more sense of it. Thank you!
I am having a tough time getting the room names to appear on my window schedule and just want to make sure I understand the process. I have created a floor plan that includes doors and windows. I have created zones to name the different rooms. On the door schedule the room names from the zones appear just fine. But on the window schedule I went into Scheme Settings and added Zone field from the General tab. The category appears in the schedule now but the zone names still remain blank?
My question is - is this the way you have to do things to get the room names to automatically appear in a D/W schedule - by creating zones first? If so are there any guesses on what I could be doing wrong here? Why do the zone names appear on the door schedule but not the window schedule? Is there some other field Im missing that I need to add to the window schedule? Thank you!
I'm assuming you in your Scheme Settings that you have added the field "Zone Name". This will be the same as "Name" which you can set in the Zone tool / info bar. Silly question but have you named your zones?
I nearly always use the zone "Construction Method: Inner Edge" to create my zones. Click in your room and place the info with the "hammer". If you use this method it will highlight any problems with the zone boundaries and will also ensure the zone automatically connects properly with the walls. Creating zones manually can be prone to minor drafting errors that could cause the walls & associated windows to be outside the zone.

Yes that was exactly how I created my zones using the inner edge hammer tool. I also named the rooms in each zone and didn't default to the category name. I didn't really change any of the default settings either so I'm not sure what the issue could be...on the door schedule I put in the "From Zone" field and that brought in the room names with no problem. But so far I have tried adding every field I can think of to get the zone names to appear for the window schedule and they just don't show up...seems like such a basic thing to make work...
There is a definite disconnect between the zones and your windows. This would appear to be because your windows are at normal height but the zone height is only 2' 2" from floor, therefore the windows are not connected to the zone. Your doors obviously go to floor level so they are making the connection.
Try changing your zone heights to match the room ceiling level so that they correctly report the room boundaries & contents. For BIM purposes this would be the correct way to work.
Thank you so much that definitely helped - at least partially. There appear to be other windows that are still facing the wrong direction. They all happen to be double hung windows and the window tag is on the interior side. The option to flip them is grayed out - I tried rotating them and that works for the zone name to appear but it has the exterior side with the larger trim facing inside is not correct. I double checked and made sure the sun faces the right direction (to the exterior) when they are placed but even then it places the window label on the interior room side and the room name doesn't appear...I feel like that was a huge thing changing the zone height though so thank you again. Hopefully I'll figure out this latest issue with the double hung windows...
