Off-topic: Japanese ideograms in computer

Didn't know where to ask this and figured somebody here might now: wiith Roman characters you write/type using combinations of 28 or whatever characters; how do they get the zillion Japanese ideograms from a keyboard?

Not much Styx got to Hungary during that time period (early 80s - mostly ABBA, Boney M ), but as it turns out, I actually knew this song.
