Ploblems with complex profilesExporting ArchiCAD 13

At my firm, we are now needing to start integrating our models with our consultants and are needing to be exporting IFCs for use for them. We have previously exported IFCs on earlier jobs, but for some reason, when I am creating my IFC files (trying a couple different buildings), the exterior complex profile walls are:

1. coming in without being trimmed to roof
2. the individual wall layers of the complex profile are coming through as separate components
3. the windows punched through these exterior walls are not coming in at all

This was after I converted to IFC then opened in ArchiCAD to check it out. Since we had successfully made IFCs in R12, I opened one of our ArchiCAD R12 IFCs we created previously, and the complex profiles were handled correctly (windows shown, trimmed to roof, single wall component). Once I found this to be the case, I then saved out a .PLN from our AC13 building as an AC12 .PLN, converted that file to an IFC (seeing if there is something wrong with R13 compared to R12) and the windows DID come-through and the walls remained trimmed by the roofs. However, the wall profiles reset and there was some weird geometry, but 2 of the 3 issues were resolved using R12 to output the IFCs. I am trying various options in the IFC options, but to no avail…

I ask the wizards of ArchiCAD to swoop-in and please advise! Thank you very much!

I hope GS is listening to this particular Post about IFC and file conversion and compatibility, as NO Solution, to this type of problem will become the downfall of ArchiCAD.
We are a fifteen year old user of ArchiCAD and the proposals that we are responding to beg for compatibility of the BIM model with our consultants.
Discussions like these that do not have resolutions only lead principals of our firm to ask "should we be using Revit instead".... "all our consultants are using it"... "why aren't we".
I think GS needs to push this topic to the highest level and show stories, and examples and IFC settings that discuss this topic completely. Brief blurbs about compatibility are not enough and time is running out.

This is troubling indeed. I was hoping that the IFC handling would improve in 13. (I have been largely stuck in 12 for Navis compatibility.) This really should be getting a top priority at GS.

Hi Guys
and I too have huge problems with updating files between engineers and myself. I cant see why GS cant add the IFC as a hotlinked file so that it would be able to autoupdate. I'm one of those that was 'forced' well almost into using Archicad after donkeys years with Autocad. No I'm not saying that I regret the extra learning as I like Archicad. All I want to is to be able to have some kind of automatic file translations between Archicad and Tekla.
Does anyone have any workable suggestions?

I haven't had the chance to try it myself yet but I understand that ArchiCAD works quite well with Tekla. You can check it out here.

There is a link there to a webinar presented last September. As I recall it looked pretty good.

Yes I understand that Tekla works well and I have the latest AC13 and my engineer in the Uk has Tekla 15. I have to delete the IFC layer each time and remerge, which a not really how it should be, in my opionion.
Someone told me that I have to use the BIM server but havent tried it yet. Thanks for the reply, I'll read the article and keep trying.

Yes, there is no such feature in ArchiCAD.
I guess the problem is that the IFC file has to be translated to ArchiCAD elements and this process should be automatized for the automatic update to be possible.
Maybe you could make a wish.

added to wishlist. An important issue I fee, to enable better associations with colleagues. The same should be available in programs such as Tekla, again automatic handling of the Archicad file.
Until it happens, will have to manually organise the engineering files.
