i-drop works with DWG files, but not GSM files :-(

I tried creating an i-drop page to drag-and-drop a GSM file. When I tried it, my ArchiCAD session crashed, so it looks like ArchiCAD doesn't support i-dropping GSM files--that's too bad because it would be a quick way to insert ArchiCAD content from the web.

Another issue is that if I try to go to the URL that is my GSM file, my browser's QuickTime plug-in intercepts it since that's the file extension for a raw audio stream file, so I can't download a GSM file from the web unless I right-click on the hyperlink, right?

Any ideas on how the best way to get GSM content from the web into my ArchiCAD session would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance, Chuck

I guess this Graphisoft plug-in helps in the above issue, but it would be nice if it also enabled drag-and-drop into an ArchiCAD session (it only allows the user to save the GSM file to disk, right?).

AFAIK, i-drop is an Autodesk-only technology?

You can drag-and-drop any GDL object from Finder or Explorer directly into/onto your open project. The downside of this is that the object will be listed in Library Manager under 'other' at its original location in the file system (or network), which I consider a bad file management scenario for management purposes.

IMHO, it is better to drag the object into a folder of either the Company Library or Project Library, each of which would be typically loaded in a project. While PLA's will include lib parts wherever they may be, this organized method of lib management makes it more likely that the lib parts will be backed up (they'll be someplace that is backed up) and that things will work with TeamWork.

I've not tried dragging and dropping a URL to a gsm recently enough to remember what happens...

Not clear what you mean by "Autodesk-only." You can drag-and-drop DWG data via i-drop into ArchiCAD. If you mean you can only drop Autodesk data via i-drop into ArchiCAD, then it looks like you are correct. Keep in mind that i-drop is a general tool for dragging-and-dropping any kind of data--it just seems that the ArchiCAD implementation only likes DWG data.

Okay, so it seems that the best-practice scenario of grabbing GSM files from the web would follow this workflow (downloading them into these folders) also.

thanks, Chuck
