Process for creating details from sections...

We need a tool that when you cut a section through the model, it will produce a 2D line & fill detail. What we do currently is cut the section then take a detail bubble at the desired point, hide the source section marker and then placed a linked marker to the detail on the layout...For example it's a 5 step process to get a window head or sill detail. Has anyone come up with a more efficient method?

How about just setting the section to 'Drawing' mode - essentially reducing it to 2D and mimicking Detail behavior?

Skip the "take a detail of the section" approach.

Cut a section, place view on a layout, change the scale etc as usual, shink/expand to fit to the window head, change scale, done.
Take the detail directly as its own "original" section.

Generally speaking any detail that can be referenced to by your schedule,
does not require a reference on either the plan or a section. Thresholds,
jambs, heads, some flashing details, roof penetrations, roof curbs, etc.

Of course if your job is for the Corp of Eng, or DOD, University, etc, or just so large, clarity becomes the paramount issue,
then by all means continue the traditional double referencing.

That is so fantastically simple... Wow,the things that can be over looked eh?

It is exactly what we were looking for, thanks Link

Sure.

It's not so profound if you know the history of marker linking, but I'm glad it helped.

Ok, so my next question is how do I make the back refernce in the drawing title work? I tried an example by placing a section marker in plan and placing the section view on a layout. The enable back refernce option was avail but I got the "LayID" autotext.

Sorry, to elaborate further, I set the section marker to source marker, with marker reference to first placed drawing of the viewpoint

You will need to place on a layout a drawing that contains the section marker.

Presumably the section marker appears on the floor plan? Once that plan is placed on a layout then it would give the title of the section something to back reference to.

That is, the plan will appear in the back reference list of the section drawing, once placed.

(It is actually possible to make the connection before the plan drawing is placed, by checking the all available drawings option in the back reference dialog too, but it's been a little finicky in the past.)

yeah we did that lol, the detail is suposed to reference the paln on sheet A-104 for example. we use back referencing quite frequently and have instances of both manual and auto in our file. i tried changing the status of the section marker back and forth bwtn drawing and auto re-build, making sure to up date the plan on sheet A-104 but still get the #LayID autotext. it just seems like the auto reference should work and i am just mystified as to why it does not...

aaaaaand apparently i just work too fast for archicad lol... there was a delay after i updated the plan this last time, but after i posted my last response i went back to check again and there it was; the layout name popped up in the available selctions for the back reference

sometimes you just have to ask out loud...
