in version 23, what happened to the control for putting a big X over a door or window to be demolished. Can't find it any more in renovation filter controls.

I can see it there, under the "Elements to be Demolished" group, there is the "Mark Openings with X Symbol" checkbox. (It is grayed and does not apply when the "Hide Door/Window/Skylight/Opening Symbol" checkbox is checked.)

Found it, thanks. Those multi-level dialogues hide things sometime.
