Tip of the Month, November 2024: Optimizing Your Parameter Adjustments in Archicad

Dear Community Members,

When working on large projects, you often need to make bulk updates to multiple elements. While the Inject Parameters tool is commonly used for this operation, it carries the risk of transferring unwanted settings. Thanks to our community moderators @Laszlo Nagy  and @Karl Ottenstein , we now have two efficient alternatives for gaining precise control over your parameter updates in Archicad!
These methods allow you to modify multiple elements while ensuring you only change the specific settings you want, without affecting other properties.

Option 1: Using Interactive Schedules

@Laszlo Nagy suggests using schedules for faster parameter modifications.

  1. Create a simple schedule listing only the parameters you want to modify. Include relevant columns such as Element Type, any other specific parameter (e.g., Height or Width), and Quantity.2 field and criteria.png

  2.  In the schedule settings, enable "Merge Similar Items" - this will group identical elements together. For example, instead of listing 20 separate walls that are all the same height, you'll see a single row, like in this example:

    3. Modify the parameter value in the schedule
and watch as all instances update automatically!

Option 2: Use the Find and Select Tool

@Karl Ottenstein  shares another handy solution using the Find and Select tool.

  1. Open Find & Select (you can find it under the Edit menu or use Ctrl+F / Cmd+F)

  2. Create your selection criteria - for example:
    • Select all elements of a specific type (e.g. Wall)
    • Add additional criteria if needed (e.g. Height, Width, Material, etc.)
      2F & S2.png
  3. Once your elements are selected, you will see them highlighted in your 3D or 2D window, like in this example:
    image (2) (1).png

  4. Use the Info Box (the floating palette) to change parameters, or the Use Settings dialog (Ctrl+T / Cmd+T) to modify multiple settings at once

Pro Tip from Karl: Sometimes when you select multiple elements that already have your desired setting (for example, some walls are already 3.5m high), you'll need to:

Change the value to something else first (e.g. 3.0m)

Then change it back to your desired value (3.5m) to make sure the change will apply to all selected elements uniformly.

This method is particularly useful when you need to visually verify which elements you're modifying before making changes.
