Customizing the functions keys on MAC

Is there any way to assign commands to the functions keys on the MAC? We can do this on windows...?

Aside from third party solutions... sadly, no.

I don't understand this unless there is something particularly quirky in how the Mac handles the function keys.

This one should definitely go in the wish list.

How about making this a Wish List item?

This question bothers me too. I have just rejoined this forum after updating my systems to Panther and AC 8.1.

I lost my old faithfull QuicKeys, which needed update only once between MacOS 6 and 7, now I’m working with QK 30 days demo version. Not complaining because I could not afford this 100 dollar program, more I’m wondering why my 8000 euro AC (abt. 10 000 USD today, sick!) cannot handle this issue.

Tip to Graphisoft: bundle QuicKeys to every Mac package, it adds value to our work more than 100 bugs worth.

IMHO these present cmd-opt-shift+something “shortcuts” are pure nonsense compared to one key functions. Why you must now be a concert pianist to get AC to fly???

8.1 does have one key shortcuts. Just not F keys.

Yes there are and that is a little progress, but still not for menu items nor function keys. I feel that even the use of contextual menu slows my work a bit, my ideal has been since I saw 20 years ago Intergraph’s function keyboard, push one button and GO... The best interface I know. (Voice recognition may be? –if you work alone.)
Every time I have to concentrate to my next move, set my hand and fingers to unergonomic positions, my workflow suffers.
