Is anyone using Epson large format printers?

I asked this once before and it seemed that no one had much experience with them at the time. I am quite interested again because the lease is up on our HP 1050C and we are looking for a replacement.

I am getting mixed feelings (and reading mixed reports) about HP these days, and the specs on the Epson machines are very appealing. Particularly the 7 color archival inks and the ability to print directly to presentation board.

So has anyone used one recently?

We have an Epson 3000, ethernet connection. The 3000 will print C sized documents (17" x 22") as well as photo quality prints. Since Epson developed a driver for OS X, it has been fantastic. It does not use archieval inks, and this is a big drawback. In 2002 we used it to print 120 backlit pictures for our home show display. During 2003 we noticed the pictures were "disappearing" (certain colors simply faded away). We also like to print our docs in color as the construction crews have a clearer understanding of what is new and what is existing, etc. When the docs get wet the inks bleed.

To reprint our backlit pictures, we purchased an Epson Stylus Photo 2200. This printer will print to 13" wide (not really wide enough for docs) and uses petroleum based inks. The ink will not smear and will outlast anything on the market. One drawback of the ink is that it does not have the punch of the dye based inks. Acceptable, but not as vibrant.

The 3000 sells for about $1,000.00. The 2200 for about $700. To get the ink you really want, and the size you need, you will have to shell out $3,000 for the Epson Stylus Pro 7600. We opted not to buy the 7600, since we allready had the 3000. The budget just would not allow it. But, in your case, I would recommend the 7600. You will not be disappointed. Epson was a little slow getting drivers for OS X, but have now caught up. Their printers are solid, fast, and require little maintenance.

Thanks for the input. I have also had good experiences with the smaller Epson printers (such as the 3000) since they got their act together on the drivers etc. (The old 1500 was a nightmare for Mac users.) This is why I am looking into replacing our HP1050c (E-size) with an Epson. Have you had any direct experience with the 7600?

I guess I should have been more specific. I am considering either the 9600 or 10600 (the 7600 is too small for us). If anyone has used any of these three I am very interested to know your opinion.

BTW: I am looking at this as the first part of a two phase acquisition. Once we are established in our new office (and revenues permitting) I would like to get an Océ, Kip or Xerox for production work. I am leaning toward the Océ but am curious if anyone has any comments on the others. The Océ that seems best for us is the TDS400 (with the scanner if we can manage it), but I have had problems (in other offices) getting the quality of the output up to the 600dpi claimed in the specs (apparently a driver issue).

Have not worked with an Oce for ages, BUT I do remember that lots of complaints have been posted here on them. As you are a multiplatform office, your PC side should take care of it. IMHE, the only correct crossplatform printing solution does come from Epson, 3000 onwards. 3000 stays my favourite of all times!

I am familiar with all the Océ problems (I've posted on them myself) but I've always found a way to get them to work, and the devil you know...

But Epson doesn't have a high volume machine like the Océ, Kip & Xerox printers.
