Monitor recommendation

What is the best monitor to use with a MacBook Pro to run Archicad and to watch the occasional movie? (Along with some word processing and web surfing; no need for gaming or photo editing.) Which should I avoid?
There are a zillion contenders and I need to find some sort of basis on which to make a choice.
