I looked at other posts to this type of problem and have tried changing the parallel settings in bios to ECP and EPP but it still doesn't recognize the key. I have done a complete uninstall and reinstall as well as install the newest version of the driver but nothing seems to work.
The computer is a P4 Dell with 512 mbs of RAM and 40 gig hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated....

Have you tried running a diagnostic on the parallel port itself?
Does the OS recognize and verify that the port is working properly?

I recently ran into a problem with an older version of ArchiCAD, version 6.5, when it stopped working stating that the protection key was not responding.

Check whether a printer is working - in fact, I had a case once when the LPT port was turned off in BIOS.
