Help...!

We are running a network of just over 10 macs, mainly 10.3.9 and ArchiCAD 8 and 9. We have recently upgraded a few of the machines to 10.4 and have now encountered the following problem (the problem has been consistent through 10.4.3-10.4.6).

When using teamwork, when more than one person is using the project, which is most of the time, any plp file that has a 10.4 workstation accessing it corrupts. When sending/receiving, signing in or signing out you get error messages like 'Cannot write temporary section file:7 Section 7-7. Permissions error (on file open)'. At the end of the process (signing in/out, sending/receiving) you then get a further error message saying that x number of Sections/Details could not be read. Open the Sections/Details to rebuild them. This happens with details and sections and afterwards you find any 2d information on the detail/section has disappeared. Not a good thing. Normally the information can be copied in again from a backup but it is very far from ideal.

I have updated the machines to get around the 'Connection failed' problem without any problems and the programme seems to operate normally with plns and mods.

The problem occurs whether the file is an old file, newly created file and whether there are 10.3.9 users working on it as well.

The problem doesn't seem to be affected by whether a team member has been mainly working as 'team leader' or not.

All of our files are served off a 10.2.8 Server. Home accounts are network based, hosted on the same server.

My feeling is that this is a permissions issue, possibly a problem with the ACL implementation in 10.4. This could be resolved by upgrading the server to 10.4 but ideally I want to avoid doing this at this time.

Does anyone have any ideas, as I am all out here! In particular it would be useful to know where this Temporary Section/Detail file is created, as this might give me a chance to sort out the permissions issue.

Any help is very gratefully received!

This problem is not new, you may have just been lucky. We've seen this problem since Archicad 8 on OS 10.2.

Hmmm, must have been lucky so far I guess. We have had it happen on an isolated couple of occassions in the past but since we upgraded to 10.4 it happens almost completley consistently everytime.

Has anyone found a work round or do we just give up on teamwork?

Thanks for the feedback.

Not to worry you, but it's not unique to teamwork. We actually see it more frequently on solo projects.

Hi there,

it might have something to do with this:

Thanks for that, however I don't think this is the cause. As I read the Apple KB article this affects client machines on 10.2, all of our clients are on 10.3.9 or 10.4.6, it is the server that is on 10.2.8 and it is fully patched with everything from Apple.

I am hoping that ArchiCAD 10 may solve all my problems!

Many thanks.

That problem is not unique to Archicad. We've seen it in OpenOffice, Word, Acrobat, and other applications. I would not expect Archicad to fix an OS problem.
