Wireless Printer

Hi,

Does anybody know of a wireless printer? I am currenty using a HP Designjet 500 A1 printer but would prefer to not have to have the server on to run it. I would also like to keep the printer further away from me.

I have a smaller A4 wireless Brother printer which is nice to use but I am considering a larger format printer for my drawing printing with wireless connectivity....up to A1 or B1.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Regards,

Hi,

Been wondering about this too, don't know of a printer but a wireless print switch might be the next best thing.

You can get them with up to 4 usb ports into which you plug your printers/multifunction machines so you could group your printers and/or scanner someplace handy, maybe the room next door, and send the prints by wireless to them.

Of course the printers will still make garbage out of the critical print as usual, you just won't be able to see them doing it till it's too late

There's always a catch.

I am using an Apple Airport Base Station with the 500 without problems.

Hi,

The problem with the Apple Airport Base Station is that it has only one usb port and is considerably more expensive, Euro 169 as against Euro 107 for example, for a D-Link print server which has 4 usb ports allowing you to connect your other printers, multifunction printer and scanner etc before you have to go to a hub. Apple seems to have a thing about not including enough usb ports on their equipment, there are 3 on my iMac which now has 2 hubs hanging off it. A quick glance through available Windows motherboards indicates that most of them have between 8 and 12 usb ports.

My experience with D-Link is they last for 2 years. max 3. Then buy again. This goes for a number of consecutive routers, modems, switches and whatever, that I was lured to buy because of the low price tag. I thought it was just a coincidence, until it happened the third or fourth or so time. Never again.

Netgear is better, but Apple's equipment typically lasts so long you'll want it to break, or to retire it for other reasons, like too old/slow/obsolete or whatever. No luck. It just works.

That may have something to do with the price.

My Airport Extreme Base Station has been continually on for the las 5 years. AFAIK you can connect USB hubs to the new ones.

And it is nice to see that quality might actually win out for once, unlike betamax/vhs and others.

Thanks for the info. So the wireless network switch gets plugged into a power outlet, plugs into the printer, picks up the wirelessly transmitted print file and prints. Sounds excellent. I think the range is good on the apple airport base station....about 30m from memory?

Cheers,
