Adding a RADIUS to a steel beam in the object libray!

Hi everyone,

I am using ArchiCAD 8.1 and need help on adding a radius on a steel beam so that i can use it as a rafter in a curved roof. I would greatly appreciate it if somebody could help me out by either telling me how to do it or just doing it for me.

if I had to script a parametric curved beam I'd use the tube command.
Alternatively build it on the plan ( as if in elevation view ) project it in 3d elevating from the top ( so you see the real top) and the save as GDL object.

There probably is a standard object that does it, but someone else will have to direct you to it

it is one of the more complex commands. I suggest you look at the GDL manual.

2 easy methods


1-gdl object

'web beam curved' object in the standard library

building structures>steel structures>spaceframes

it's got holes in it

just give the holes a zero radius and they'll go away

2-trussmaker

draw an arc in a S/E window for the centreline of the beam

select arc

menu>extras>trussmaker>create truss

set type, orientation and size of profile

(increase curve resolution for a smoother beam)

Or you could just draw it using the Slab or Wall tool. That would work, as is, or if you're ambitious it could be saved as a GDL object. The User Manual has a good description of saving GDL objects.

i know about the "web beam curved" but i want to be able to
curve the beam that i have posted. as it allows you to select the section type and weight easily.

actually on closer examination the tube command cant follow a curve path
