Door leaf object-materials

Have created a new door leaf; able to insert the leaf in a door and place on plan. However, the leaf materials will not change per the model attributes settings, but stays with the material it was created with. Is there any way to make the leaf material changeable, or do I have to create a new leaf for each different material used?

Basically the custom door leafs use the materials set when they are created and they can't easily be user defined.
It is possible but I am not sure it is worth it.
