GDL Cookbook ?

Anonymous
Not applicable
I am excited to start working with GDL. I have been exploring the scripts in the aC 8.1 library and reading the GDLmanual that came with AC 8.1. This seems like a good place to start but I would like some more resources. I tried to order the GDL Cookbook from Objects Online but apparently it's out of print until ver. 4 comes out. Does any one know when This will be available? Does anyone have an extra copy of ver.3 lying around ? Any other good resources for learning GDL? Thanks!

If anyone does, David NC should. Email him privately. He used to post notices on the remaining quantities.

Try also Yahoo and other e-shop places; you might get lucky.

As for learnign GDL, check out DNC's schedule; no better way that his seminars, believe me!

In fact, David is scheduled for 3 consecutive days (attend, 1, 2 or all 3 days) in Irvine, CA September 15-17, 2004 going from intro to advanced. The flyer I have shows $195 for one day, $345 for two or $495 for all three. John Stebbins of Digital Vision is hosting the classes:

I am still writing Edition FOUR at the moment.

Actually, i have taken a break from it for a month to write a book for Graphisoft called 'Introduction to Object Making with ArchiCAD" IOMWAC whcih will be a free PDF book for ArchiCAD users, and will be in more than english.

the last one in 2000 was in English, French and German, and for the present one, i would suggest that any hispanics reading urge GS's wishlist to do a Spanish version as that is the most important alphabetic language after english. i hoped they would do it for the last book, but lets hope so for the new one.
By the way, its a total rewrite, and that;s what you might call 'speedwriting' the book writing, the research into the objects, the book layout etc in 20 days. Back to the Cookbook now. IOWAC is with the publisher for checking at the moment.

The IOMWAC is about object making without ArchiCAD (35%) and GDL easy stages (65%) and although it is mostly GDL for beginners, it covers some of the most interesting areas, providing info on Texture mapping, Graphical hotspots, and Solid Geometry.

Back to the Cookbook, i have a problem. To get up to something of the Stature of the previous book, I would have to write 300 pages, and this is a massive undertaking for a solo individual without sponsorship, and paying the full cost of printing up front (and while I am writing i cannot divert to feepaying work without delaying the book). its looking good now, a major rewrite since Jan 2004, but still in the 100 and somethings, a long way to go.

I wonder if people would accept a first level edition with a follow up the year after. printing it in two stages.... easy if I send out all the books, but difficult for the ones sold on Amazon or through OOL. still thinking........

Since you live in California, why not consider the 3day seminar in September, in Irvine CA.?? Its not as cheap as the book, but its a lot quicker, and of course i will bring the books with me for the participants. What I have been doing for my GDL course in the University here is printing out as much of the book as exists so far, for distribution to them.

Thanks for the reply's. I am planning on attending the 3 day in september. Should I register now?

You should do so urgently - the details are in Karls article above. The reason for the urgency that this is already fully booked with about 15, and i was expecting fewer - so we ought really to close the door. However, between now and September is a few months yet, so book yourself in, and hope that someone drops out. or hope that John finds a big enough room.
By the way, that wont be 15 for all three days continuously. 15 over the three days, some people will be coming in for the first one or two but not the 3rd, and some for the 2nd and 3rd only.

By the way, in case you are thinking that you can wait till another visit..... dont count on it. My wife is increasingly disabled and my ability to disappear to LA for a week is getting more difficult - secondly, my aunt who normally accommodates me in LA is no longer able to, so I shall probably be putting up in the LAX or Irvine Travelodge (or somewhere equally grim) so the pleasure of coming over (and enjoying the beauty of Emerald Bay) is no longer there.

The precise date is dependent on Graphisoft, who are the publisher. I am worried that the issue date will be a while yet. there will be time to get it translated into other languages.

write to me privately if you are desperate for GDL texts, because i can release PDFs of the Cookbook as it is so far, and will be issuing Paper copies of the Cookbook as far as it has reached in Sept if it isnt already out by then.
