Mac Shared Network Drive with shared library will not...

... load in Library Manager.

I can see the shared drive in the "Local/LAN" pane on the left, but when the triangle is clicked it just disappears and no sub-tree shows. It may be a disk permissions issue (I have searched for this, too).

The shared disk is a 1TB Time Capsule disk (a shared network drive). Permissions are set automatically as "system" for Owner and "wheel" for Group.

Macs are iMac running 10.4.11 and 10.5.3. Library directory is for firm-specific files for all projects.

Since this is a "Solo" environment, would Library Cache make sense (I know nothing about this).

Thanks in advance for any advice.

This is very interesting and a timely topic. I have nothing to add to the conversation other than:

Was the AC session running before the computer "saw" the network device? .....In other words did you plug the time capsule in while AC was running without doing a quit/relaunch? Doubtful, I know but you have to ask.

I kind of doubt the permissions thing but I imagine lots of people will be interested in doing what you are with time capsule. Please post back here if you uncover anything new.

If I don't get any really good ideas by tonight I think I'll experiment with setting user accounts on the Time Capsule disk to see if "ownership" is the key.

Believe me, I've restarted several times over the last several days with TC and ArchiCAD. The iMacs were a bit stubborn when it came to changing network access points. A half-dozen restarts seemed to do the trick (along with a lot of futzing in the mean time).

So why would one part of ArchiCAD (the open-file dialog) see the shared remote disk but another (Library Manager) would not? The answer to this question is the key I think...

Those are just what Owner and Group the file/folder belongs to, not permission settings.

You need to allow full Read and Write privileges/permissions for both owner, group and All, and both for the library files, the folders they reside in, and the folders above them in the hierarchy (except Write for two steps up and above). This should fix it.

There is a free utility called BatChmod http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/ that will help you fix this fast. Just take care so you don't change Owner and Group names accidentally! Backup first!

We have an "airdisk" set up with a USB drive connected to a Airport Extreme. We've had the same problem you are describing. I've not been able to determine if it is a permissions thing or some other random glitch. I haven't spent too much time trying to fix it because we are going to set up and actual file server soon. I do have a work around though... Create and alias on your local machine for the library you want to access then point the library manager at that... It seems to work even better if you make the alias' name the same as the library (without alias in the file name)....

Not a fix, but it works!

I suspect is has something to do with the library manager. Accessing files when opening a new instance of Archicad works fine. It is only in the library manager that the shared disk is not accessible...

On a related but separate note. Do you use MS Word? If so, can you open, change and re-save a file that is on the shared drive? We can't.... Not sure if it is a permissions thing, but I know it is a MS Word problem because Excel works fine.....

and possibly, slightly related:

Update Enables TimeMachine Backups To Airport Extreme USB Drives

Many folks have been waiting for this. Interestingly, Apple does not explicitly state that this is one of the features of the update.

Thanks for the idea SteveC0013. I'll have to try that (I never got around to setting up user accounts) and hope this will be resolved by either Apple of Graphisoft in a later update.

Regarding the MS Word thing, I can open, change, and save to the Time Capsule disk without problem (MS Word 2004, OS 10.4.11). Maybe it is a Word 2008 or OS 10.5 thing - or some combination...

Thanks again.

Update:

I installed the latest Airport software update with no effect to the Archicad library issue....

It does seem to have fixed my MS Word issue though... Not that it is important to this thread...

We have had this same problem after upgrading our server. Different hardware but identical software including the OS.

Numerous attempts at repairing permissions on servers & workstations had no effect.

Reinstall of Libraries, then ArchiCAD, then OS, on workstations had no effect.

Problem finally went away with an upgrade of the server to OSX 10.4.6. The upgrade was planned and this was a unintended (but gratefully received) side effect. But I don't know whether it was the installation process or the new OS itself that solved the problem.

Best conclusion I could reach was it was a permissions & pathing issue, which affected the Library manager only.

From the workstation it seemed as if the LM "knew" where to look (using an afp tree), but when it couldn't find the old location it became "confused" and locked out the "new" path.

But I am convinced the problems were all on the server itself. Weird.

If anybody is interested I accidentally solved it - I think.

I changed my Time Capsule set-up to use "Disk Accounts" with usernames and login passwords. Each computer automatically logs-in (via Keychain) so it is seamless, and now ArchiCAD Library Manager treats the Time Capsule Disk like any other attached drive. I don't know if it would work if we were to not use accounts and set the Time Capsule Disk to be protected by a Disk Password different that Time Capsule Password (the way I had set-it up and the default set-up). But, I might be trying that in the near future (having some Time Machine problems with Disk Accounts).
