Roof Accessories

Does anyone know, where in the world, I can find paramertic GDL roof vents? I am looking for half round, sheet metal, dormer / eyebrow roof vents that can be resized and placed on any roof pitch. Looked and looked, but I can't find one for free or for sale.

Thanks

Mark,
It just occured to me that using TrussMaker
to make this barrel vault is even easier than
using Profiler. Again no edge lines.

You have done a nice job with the dormer roof vent. I think you can now save the dormer as a library part and use it on other roofs of the same slope. The lines in the barrel vault are always an issue, but if the dormer represents sheet metal it should be okay.

If you were to use profiler to make the barrel of the dormer could you trim the vent wall to the barrel? Or is your louvered vent a stand alone independent object not needing a wall? If so where do I find it and other louvers of various shapes that I could wrap into roof vents? I like what you have done.

How do you use TrussMaker to make a barrel vault?

Seiss,
Draw a section marker anywhere, open the section/elevation window,
draw an arc of the radius you want, select the arc, go to extras/TrussMaker,
and enter the attributes you want, enter the dimensions you want,
in this case the barrel vault thickness is the vertical height of the
"truss member" and the depth is the axial length of the vault.
This depth setting is not critical because the resulting object is stretchable.
TrussMaker works off of centers, so if you want the vault to be
1/4" thick and you want the outside surface to be of a certain radius
then you need to subtract 1/8" from the radius of the arc you draw.
This procedure is even easier than using Profiler.
BTW, I think the object Marc used was the "Half Round Gable Louver.gsm"
It is an object not a door or window.

As you assumed and Peter say's, it's the "Half Round Gable Louver.gsm". It's in the 06 Wood-plastic folder> Louvers and Headers.

Refer to this post if you ever need a triangular shaped vent.......

Seiss,
Since Mark did not answer the question you directed to him
about trimming an object to a Profiler barrel vault, I will.
Profiler objects (unless "Issolid" is OFF or is not in the parameter list) and TrussMaker objects are solid and can theoretically participate in SEO.
You might be able to use the barrel vault to trim the louver object using SEO.
I have not tried this and I suspect that maybe it won't work
because I have noticed that sometimes objects in a SEO with
other object do the equivalent of "Split" which is not what you want.
You will just have to try it.

Thanks Peter. I didn't need to SEO. I traced the louver in elevation and then copied it when building the vault.

Side note to Seiss, No need to adjust to different roof pitches as the barrel vault is long enough on the back span to "bury" into the roof.

Mark,
I had been assuming that the object would not be buried
because it could be cut off at the roof surface using SEO
with the roof as operator.
This all assumes of course that the roof is not flat
and has some significant pitch.
The manufacturer of those roof vents that Seiss directed
us to limited the roof pitch to 6:12 or greater as I remember.

True. But I didn't bother using SEO as I only looked at the model from the "outside"..... (Currently, I'm copying the model in my sections... and then using 2D line work... I know, I know..)

I wish to thank you both for the help you have been in directing me towards a solution with the dormer vent issue. This forum can really be a positive experience if you work at it.

I have made paper copies of your comments and will work at making the roof vent dormers as you describe, as there appear to be no commercial GDL objects available.

Both of you came up with interesting ideas to make dormer objects that with my limited experience I would not have thought of, For example, I did not know that there were louvered vent objects in the AC library, or that you could make a barrel vault with TrussMaker.
