You are only 6 months late to the party... SSA was always just a support agreement, which just so happened to include an upgrade to the next version. Since I started using AC at v17, that is how I have understood the wording. If it was written differently prior to that I would not have a clue. Basically, if you stopped paying SSA, you would just remain on your last version, being a "perpetual" licence, and would have no access to GS technical support a few select libraries depending on your region and the free basic lessons on the Learn Portal. As of the start of this year, AC has gone subscription only, at a higher price than the SSA, and several features that rely on the cloud have been excluded from the those not on the new subscription model.
Everyone who was on a SSA was given the option to continue receiving it for the next few years given paying it all upfront... or transfering over to Subscription at a discount which incrementally reduces each year.
