A hole in fill

Is there a way I can put a hole in fill, the same way I would make a hole in a slab or a roof?

I have a rectangle within a rectangle, and only want to fill the area between the rectangles.

The typical fill does the whole rectangle without eliminating the center portion. I tried with magic wand, selecting either edge, but no luck there.

This works on any polygon (fill, roof, slab) - and for the reason above I made it a habit to select the objects by right clicking, and choosing Select and activate tool.
Option/alt clicking works too, and it's a bit faster when the element is already selected.
