I have a rectangle within a rectangle, and only want to fill the area between the rectangles.
The typical fill does the whole rectangle without eliminating the center portion. I tried with magic wand, selecting either edge, but no luck there.

You don't even need the pallette. If you highlight the fill just draw another one inside it. Same as a slab or a roof. I have a feeling magic wand doen't work when doing this but don't quote me on that.
It should work to subtract, but unfortunately it won't work in one single step.
Cheers,
Link.

It is important that you have your fill tool selected in the tool box. If you don't, the selected fill will simply be de-selected.
HTH.
Cheers.

I tried the fill, then highlight and draw another on top......did not work. Maybe I did miss a step as Link implied.
What is the missing step?
This works on any polygon (fill, roof, slab) - and for the reason above I made it a habit to select the objects by right clicking, and choosing Select and activate tool. Then you draw the hole.
So: in order to make a hole in a polygon, the polygon tool has to be selected and the tool has to be active.
