My question is how to make a new line type part of the default list of line types.

The linetype you created was in the ~other~ project only.
Some possible ways of getting it into your new project:
Make a module of the line and merge it into the new project;
Cut/copy & paste it into the new project;
Drag & drop it (if enabled) between two open AC's (PC only!);
Use Attribute Manager to Append/Overwrite it.
