ArchiCAD 11

ArchiCAD 11 will come soon (as much as I suspect..)
What can AC 11 do better than AC10?

Hi Tom,
All my promo material is in pmk from past projects & bringing it into v10 lineweights & fills didn't import correctly so not being able to access them at the output stage made them pretty much useless - far too many to bring in individually as details & reposition & edit - not against new functionality but please don't cripple my final output control - running in v9 in rosetta emulation slowed down such graphically intense files to worse than native PPC so the whole upgrade didn't allow me to move forward adding to my base of work...

Tom,
Could you not see the tongue planted firmly in cheek?? Geez....c'mon....no 3D?? Are ya nuts?? IT WAS A JOKE!

Apple was only shipping Intel Macs when 10 'shipped' - ArchiCAD didn't work until 9 months after the Intel macs were introduced - I hardly call that good platform support for an upgrade...
It could be worse. Adobe is just NOW coming out with MacIntel-compatible software.

Have you seen AC11? It's pretty 2D heavy!

Tom, As I said earlier, I sat through a 2 hour presentation with my reseller and came to the conclusion that for me it is not a good investment this time.

I've made four projects with AC11 (beta). After one month it was impossible for me to go back to AC 10 without Virtual Trace, Worksheets and Transparency in OpenGL.
I could leave (for some time) direct export to Artlantis or Cigraph plugins (they are not ready now) but without these new features my work is much harder (and longer).

I might be wrong about this... aside from the ability to curve profiled walls (which should have been in the first service pack for AC10 anyway), were there ANY 3D/modeling improvements in 11? I'm blanking on any right now.

We are in confidence crises.

Let me add these observations:

The library should be newer updated only enlarged – if it must be I recommend a 5 year cycle.

For most of projects one start a preliminary obtain site plan approvals and then a year or so later design a building. This is a 3 to 4 year cycle new releases should mimic this.

Integrate the entire professional tools in workable program:
Site design Module
The model should be capable of generating an analytical static model (same as Revit) to export import from and to Risa the largest share structural program used in the US.
Have integrated thermal envelope analysis capability
Have an HVAC module
Have an electrical power and lighting Module
Have fire protection Module
Have plumbing Module

The survival of GS is enlarging the user base it must address much more than today the above are the needed solutions.

If Nemetschek wants to lead we need a roadmap.

I'm not saying a continuing focus on 2D environment is preferred. I'm just saying taking an upgrade to incorporate a bunch of 2D ideas to entice traditional CAD users while the installed base continues to digest the major revisions in 10 makes sense. From Graphisoft's point of view anyway. I look forward to 12 maturing the improvements in 10 and maybe returning to some of the elegance that Bruce is bemoaning the loss of.

With the increased update cycle I can see them starting to stagger the development. One year 3D modeling improvements, the next year interface improvements. That way they actually gain more time to develop the 3D improvements which at this point in the maturity of the program has to be a real bear to work out. When 10 came out it was apparent to me that this was the conclusion of a set of changes that we saw the first glimmers of in AC7. So it took 5+ years to achieve. The next phase has to be harder.

Which reminds me Bruce. If you thought the IntelMac transition was rough you obviously don't remember the rocky beginnings of the release of 8. That was unusable on any machine. Yes you were double whammied by the complexity of 10 and the transitional challenges, but ArchiCAD was the first of my major programs to make the switch and still led programs like Vectorworks by a couple of months. The change for these kinds of programs was clearly not trivial. But, I have been using an IntelMac since early December and aside from some of the issues mentioned in the other IntelMac specific threads have found it to be a good experience.

Your other complaints mirror the most common complaints on the boards. Look earlier in this thread for my similar gripes. Many of us wish Graphisoft would just finish the basics. I myself have given up on ever having the ability to create a typical fascia easily. I don't know why these items never get fixed. I expect version 12 will have a Gehry setting that will distort your almost completed model but I still won't be able to create a decent stair.

But as for upgrading, I have decided that it isn't beneficial to complain about not spending my money. I find 10 to be a good product with parts that I still haven't fully explored so I'll just settle in with it for another year or so and really learn how to use what I've got. Expect to see a lot of questions on other threads. (I still can't get complex profiles to do what I want)

(How's the weather up there, I heard you got quite a bit of snow???)
Just a couple of inches- It's mostly gone now. A bummer for the fruit trees though. I'm not expecting any apples this fall.

for me a yearly upgrade is a hassle first of all. (i always say the same and i endup upgrading anyway) 'go figure' as D.A. would say !! ....

the decision to upgrade to the next version is only yours, you can perfectly wait 3 to 5 years or simply upgrade yearly or whenever you see a feature that you like, but upgrades are up to you.
