stubbornness is not always a virtue:
i have successfully downgraded to 1410. my 2256 files somehow open fine in ac8.1r1 and bg archicad operates correctly in pm3.1r1. there still was the locked file message regarding gsshellx.dll, but it shows a lower build # 3.0.0.353.
erika, are you running 1410 now?
in the meanwhile i may consider to upgrade my notebook to a new 7200 rpm 60 gig hard drives http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/travel/tre7k60.htm to replace my 2+ yr old 20 gig 4200 rpm. i believe my os may be corrupted.
thanks for everyone's assistance, this forum is great! i also appreciate david t. & jerry c. from gsus persistance.

Tim,
Yes I am back on 1410 and successfully working as before the r2 "incident". I don't know about you, but Jeffry advised me to not open any other files in r2 and to go back to 1410 until budapest or he gets back to me. AC and plotmaker working fine.

Regarding your hard drive, it may just be to full. I try to keep mine no more than half full and the project one is an 80 gig. Someone else can probably tell you more specifically the point at which the lack of unused space not available for extra temp file use becomes detrimental.
On windows programs ( as I understand it) the OS more or less automatically uses this space. If I am not mistaken, on the mac side you have to set it. Probably got this part wrong so someone please chime in.

This must be a US version thing as my International R2 is zooming along ...

Was not wrong in the times of OS9 ... now the management is more or less the same - leave the OS to do it.

20gig, especially if more than half full, is not enough for 8.x; the other day I got 2.5GB swap file (!) with 80GB drive and 1GB RAM on XP. What a crawl that was ...

All the updaters ran without a hitch for me as well but I haven't tested a PM link yet. I did notice a couple things:

Have you managed to migrate your keyboard shortcuts? Swapping the preference files as before doesn't seem to work. And have you or anyone else noticed that the library update is missing the RoofMaker Library? I found this to be true with both the updater from the US Tech site and the GS main site, the US library in both cases.

I gave up after trying about three different ways. It's very strange; the prefs copy OK, but have no effect.

I have successfully overwritten v2 lasting.prefs with v2 lasting.prefs, so it's only one do-over per office if you have standardized shortcuts.

2 things

Anyone else crashing if they save with something selected? This might not always happen, but several times as I save... example - just in case the section I am deleting is the wrong one, AC crashes (build 2256)... big help to save.

I moved preference to a new computer, and now I am warned that add-ons are missing. It is the "check doubles" add-on, and it is actually there, but also listed as "not found" (so twice), and it want let me remove it. Any suggestions, maybe which preference stores those?

thanks

Hi Erika:

Yes - your problems are file-related. I did advise using 1410 until I hear back from GS development.

I'm not working on Tim's case at all but it sounds like a system-related problem.

Tim's problem and your problem are not related. Problems did arise after the 2256 (coincidental).

Jeffry,
It’s good to see that you’re monitoring this. Can you please look into the keyboard shortcut issue. Thanks.

I just had a weird thing happen to my linetypes when taking a PM 3.1 R2/2256 LBK back to R1 for printing.

I had worked on a project in my office with 2256 and got a LBK ready to print a few revised sheets. Came to my friend's office which is still running R1+ and all of my dashed lines were solid! (Of course, I didn't notice until I had plotted )

Just updating the drawings got the correct linetypes back. But strange, nonetheless.

I haven't experienced any of the crashes or other behaviors mentioned here though.
