ArchiCAD saving error

Hi there,

We have recently experienced a very serious saving error that threatens our ability to use ArchiCAD over our office computer network.

We use networked Mac's with the CAD files residing on an OS Server 10.3.9 G4 server and our workstations are OS 10.4 G4's and G5's. The network uses a 1 Gig Ethernet hub.

We had just recently upgraded all of our OS to the versions listed above. After that we installed the ArchiCAD tiger patch on all workstations. A few weeks ago we had installed the 3rd Hotfix ArchiCAD patch bringing our Build number up to 2045.

Here's the Problem:
When editting (from a workstation) a pre-existing archiCAD file that resides on the server everything goes fine until several saves have occured. Then we inevitably get a note:

"The file (file name) was saved successfully. ArchiCAD failed to delete the following temporary file: Orig_(random number)

We then notice a temporary file has been created next to the archiCAD file. The temporary file is undeletable(through the finder) until the server is restarted. More will be created if one continues to save. Also after closing the original ArchiCAD file, upon trying to reopen it we get a note:

"Integry Checking Error! The project data was damaged in the last step."
We get a choice to Continue working w/ risk of crashes or Force Quit to return to the last Autosaved version.

This error has occurred only since all of our OS and ArchiCAD upgrades. It also occurred when we were using OS Server 10.3.4 on the server. The error does not occur when the same corruptable archiCAD file is brought to a workstation's desktop and editted and saved there, avoiding the network and avoiding the server.

Anybody have any ideas? This obviously is a serious problem as any file we work on over the network ends up corrupted and unopenable!

thank you

no problem - just as long as you tell us the final outcome when all is solved . . .

Back again,

No solution still, but here's the results of another test we did. We created a brand new folder / sharepoint on the server. It had the same settings as our previous folder / sharepoint. I then placed a CAD file within that folder and worked on it. It wasn't long before the saving error occured again.

Our next test is to update the server to OS 10. Graphisoft should be paying us for this work.

Too many people are wishing to give advice to GS. If GS pays us each time, they will go to bankrupt!

Hello there,

We performed yet another three tests, suggested by the ArchiCAD developers, with no positive results.

I cleared the “prefs” files in ArchiCAD/PlotMaker 9. Then restarted ArchiCAD to reset the above the default. The saving error still occurred.

Then I cleared the “cache” files in ArchiCAD/PlotMaker 9. Then restarted ArchiCAD to reset the above the default. The saving error still occurred.

Then I cleared the “plist” files in ArchiCAD/PlotMaker 9. Then restarted ArchiCAD to reset the above the default. The saving error still occurred.

Our next text is to update the server OS to Tiger.

Hello,

I'm not on a server and am using the same Tiger/G5/AC-9 configuration. I too have the same saving error. I haven't tried to address it yet as everything keeps working (so far), and I'm way behind.

My point is? - I don't think it's a server problem.

However, we only have the error when working over the network, If the CAD file is on our server, the error will occur through normal editting and saving functions. If the CAD file is on another station accessed through filesharing, we will get the error only if I do repeated saves really quickly!?!?! So I do believe it is a network, if not a server, issue.

What exact version of ArchiCAD are you on and is your CAD file kept on your station or are you accessing it over a network?

I'm on ArchiCad 9 with all the patches in place, running on a G5 dual 2.0 and the latest release of Tiger. There is no server involved. Back-ups are made to a second harddrive but that's it.

So far, the "try to delete the file again" button has "worked" each time but one - that instance required eight attempts before the dialog box cancelled.

Very odd ...RBG

Hello,

So we recently upgraded the OS Server to Tiger to see if that would make a difference.

It did. Now we, so far, no longer have the saving error when, from a station we are working and saving an ArchiCAD file that is located on the server.

However, we are completely unable to, from a station save a PM file that is located on the server. We receive the following not:

Error while writing file: filename.lbk
(258: Access to file or file data is denied)

This is getting old quick.

Hey Joe:

Sorry I've been out of the loop trying to catch-up. The same saving error problem is persistent with us.

You mentioned in an earlier post "wonder what system Pdeppe is using" -

There must be something to this, because from what I can tell, the problem is most prevalent on my machine. I installed Tiger 10.4 and our server is 10.3. I don't think other people in the office have the same problem (or at least I haven't heard of this)

I too get the same error you posted in Plotmaker. It is extremely frustrating.

So you mentioned that the "inherit permissions" from user's and groups didn't solve the problem and that the temp. saving issue has been resolved by upgrading your server to Tiger - is that correct?

I'm really beginning to think there may be a conflict with Tiger. I'm considering re-installing Panther to see if this will solve the problem.

I wasted most of the day re-doing Plotmaker layout books because of the Plotmaker error you mentioned and now the files I was working with has about 10 useless temp., original, and scratch files that are polluting the server.

Question for Aussie John: was this permissions problem for OX server of also client?

I agree with Joe regarding Graphisoft paying us. Also with Z. Bauer that they would be bankrupt. The printing and plotmaker interface alone requires a super genius. Shame on Graphisoft for complicating life!!!
