Are roofs always a pain?

Hi

I'm modelling a simple 4 metre by 5 metre cabin. I want to put a straight forward gable roof on it. I can't say that AC seems at all intuitive as I can't get the damned thing right...

Any help appreciated. Any decent tutorials around?

The roof tool is one of the best in the entire palette of tools, although not indeed as intuitive as it should be. See attached.

If your help files aren't working properly, try downloading the QuickTime tutorials from the Graphisoft website. You can find them there somewhere.

You will generally find all the help you need and more here, but, you do have to have given it your best shot first, which includes exploring every avenue you can think of to find the answer on your own. Then, for instance, when I come looking for help, and eventually everyone does, I assume it's "pilot error", and accept my lumps with humility. Mama always said, "Once you learn to laugh at yourself everyone else is fair game". But even more importantly these days it seems enough humility to laugh at/with Dwight. Which is becoming an increasingly difficult task to discern the difference between sarcasm and caustic bullshit. Personally, I know and kinda like the guy, but I'm starting to think he needs his ears boxed!

Don't give up on the tool, this forum, or yourself. It all comes with perseverance. Bottom line, nothing's easy or anyone could do it.

Actually a quicker and simpler version (that I picked up from an online video tutorial, I think) is to just marquee the end of the ridge (the place where all 3 planes intersect) and stretch (ctrl-H) to the gable end. That's it.

Two benefits to this approach: 1. You don't have to erase the offending part (it disappears automatically), and 2. If you change your mind, you just stretch back and you're back to your starting point (haven't used this option until last night at about 2am, so I might've been dreaming).

Now barrel vaulted roofs, that's another (creation) story.

Hmmm - I wonder where you saw this? I can't say that I agree with it. The offending part doesn't actually disappear, which is why you can stretch it back later and have it reappear. The fact that it doesn't disappear means that it could interfere with a find & select, calculations, etc.

I know I am just one person who has asked GS to have it automatically delete, but until it does, I'll continue to promote the manual delete method.

This is a technique shown on the old ArchiGuide, and there is nothing wrong with it, provided you rememeber to delete the now completely deformed roof plane where the gable should be.

No, Link, you are not the only one who asked for automatic deletion ... 😉

Help files for roof? Where can i find these? i only have AC10INT Tutorial. Theres only few minutes about roofing.
