I have a simple 150 x 150 column and a 38 x 100 beam.
am trying to subtract the beam from the column to give a lapjoint effect.
Any one able to do this?

You don't need to do SEO.
If you have AC16 or earlier, then the Beam Priority set in the Beam Settings Dialog must be greater (default value 7) then the global Column-against-Beam Priority set for Columns in the Options\Project Preference\Construction Elements Dialog ("All Columns vs. Beams" field - default value
.
In AC17, these intersections are resolved based on the Intersection Priority Number of the Building Materials assigned to the elements: if that of the Beam is higher, it will cut the Column and vice versa. If they are the same, the Beam will cut the Column.
