Is there a way to convert regular polylines into an existing 3D mesh?

yes -

select your existing mesh and then with the mesh tool active in your toolbox space-click on a polyline. this creates a new 'ridge' in the mesh that follows the original polyline.

in order to give that polyline a uniform height value, click the again somewhere along the newly created ridge-line in your mesh and use the elevation command in the pet-palette to assign the z value. each individual point along the polyline can also be given independent z-values by clicking them one-by-one.
