Different offices, different standards.
This is what I have found to be efficient:
Have Proper GSM files for separate Detail objects, each can display top, side, front, back views ( if necessary) and common pre-sets, also gives you multiple options in one single object (e.i.: Steel profile, 1 object = all sizes)
For Composed Details, like assemblies and stuff: you build up your details out of 2D elements or Detail Objects, keep them in either one single master file, or several stand alone files. From there you can "go shopping" and copy/paste, or hotlink, or simply borrow a view, by selecting a drawing from your host file.
That's kind of on top of my mind
