Energy Performance

Wouldn't it be great if as a part of the BIM solution we could run complete thermal calculations on a model much like a sun study? I imagine an API that assigns R values and thermal mass to all of the materials we model with. At any point in the design we can run performance calcs based on solar gain, energy loss due to wind (based on location and historical data).I know there is software that does this but I dont think it is quite this intagrated. This seems like the next step in BIM. Would this be a usefull tool in the future of building design? Any thoughts or arguments?

Most energy simulation software, nowadays, imports CAD models and often they demand IFC-files.

That way, the simulation developer can focus on doing it's simulation and the CAD-vendor "only" has to provide a good model.

But integration might be a fine choice for designers, certainly in design phase and project development.

AddOns like this are in use in Europe for quite some time; one of the developers that I am sure about is Austrian ArchiCAD distributor, ANull.

Some of our German speaking friends can probably shed more light on this?

does anyone know anything about geopraxis 'green building studio' web based energy analisis? "a free Web service that assists in the energy analysis of buildings in the design stages as well as with the selection of energy-efficient green building products and materials. GBS initially will support Graphisoft's ArchiCAD and Autodesk's BIM tools Architectural Desktop, Building Systems, and Revit."
here is a link where it is discussed.

The actual link is:
http://www.greenbuildingstudio.com

We've been testing it for just over a month. It is a great FREE service for early energy analysis based on location (US) and building mass and openings. It saves you a lot of up-front set-up and energy modeling time and allows you to further develop the analysis in DOE-2 or other format to use in energy analysis applications.

Congratulations to John and the rest of the GeoPraxis team on a great product and service.
