How do I model this organic shaped roof?

Hi all

I have made a concept model in MoI3d (moment of inspiration) of a large building that has an organic shaped roof. I would now like to take the form over to Archicad 12 to continue developing the design.

Can anyone help me with ideas about how to go about doing this?

I can convert using Rhino or C4D if needed but im just not sure how archicad can best handle these forms, especially as a roof.

Is mesh to roof the best route and if so .. how do i do it?

Can the curtain walling tool do this type of roof?

Im thingking that it will be a gridshell type roof eventualy so this is what I would like to be able to incorporate in the model if possible;

Any advice much appreciated.

Lucy

roof design!
.obj or .3ds export?
Try Curtain Wall (I think Nurbs Curves are the go) that Rules OUT ArchiCAD

Hello Lucy,

Other programs are ideal: Maxon Form etc. But you definitely can do this in Archicad.
The best way would be if you can export your file in Studio format or other 3d format and import directly to AC. If not, then a mesh is your answer:

1) Get as much information as you can from the model. I would want a section of each roof rib in the design, 50 sections more or less.
2) Import a plan view and the sections. If no export function is available, then do it just as you did to post your roof pictures, AC can use jpg's.
3) From the plan view create a mesh. Use the sections you imported to create accurate mesh ridges for each portion of the roof.
4) then convert mesh to roof (see AC help for this). A roof has thickness, whereas a mesh does not.
5) If you are new to AC this might be a bit much. You are going to modify the ridge elevation of 50 x 6 = 300 points at a minimum, the more points you create the smoother the resulting mesh. (I assume 50 ridges broken into a least 6 segments each).

Happy meshing,
-Mark
PS I don't know how to post pictures, I actually started on your roof just to make sure this method works. and it does.

Lucy,

How would you make that roof?

If you know, make it in ArchiCAD. Otherwise, just import your very nice shape, and put a big note: TO SPECIALIST DESIGN.

Our rice krispie less one sound colleague does a fine job of explaining how a final model might be excruciatingly created of that shape, but of course, in Archicad, there is now way to do it as an easily edited blob....

Nor would you build it as an easily edited blob. See Djordje's post. Ultimately you will have to communicate to a builder your design concept. So,How would you build it ?

Everyone knows that all you need to build a blobform is "SchpritzCrete" on chicken wire so forget the details.

Just make it thicker if you have to span a river.

Chicken wire? I knew I was forgetting something.
