If you ask me, the slowdown in the construction business here in the USA is not due to an economic crisis as much as it is due to a political and social crisis.
This is only the beginning of sorrows. I predict that this crisis will continue to grow until the sheeple realize they are being lead to the slaughter by a political party dead set on establishing a Socialist/Communist/Globalist Obamanation.

I will say a double dip seems here, unfortunately.

"Bad lending and overbuilding"
It reminds me of the Tom Waits song:
"Warm beer and cold women,"
a lesser disaster.

Still, I would hate to think where we would be without the economic interventions that have been undertaken to date. In my sector, we have been expanding steadily and hiring (70+ in the last year) but I think we are an anomaly. Margins I think are down but sales are up and like a lot on manufacturers, we are using this time to make investments in future growth.

Just for clarification:
Discussion about economic outlook in general is fine, discussing day-to-day political issues is not (and if you think it is hard to separate the two, try and err on the safe side and not discuss political issues.)
This is a very passionate ( and personal) subject that has no place on such a Forum.
(Thanks to Matthew and Karl for pointing out this situation.)

As Architects and Designers we are responsible for promoting good social interaction through architecture, function and shape. Many designs do lean towards the political and controversial and are as part of architecture as the roman coliseum was the centre of entertainment.
We are not just the creations of the economy - necessary, but loathed - we are an integral part of society, with all its politics, social and psychological problems and artistic interpretations, and as such should be acutely aware not only of all economic changes but as well all social and political trends that change our course from time to time. Discussion on this might turn passionate but honestly, where does real architecture come from if not through passion?

I understand what you are saying but the simple point is that we do not discuss political issues on ArchiCAD-Talk.
