How is the global economy affecting you?

Now that I am out on my own as a consultant and I am dealing with different companies, I just wanted to hear from others in the ArchiCAD community on how they're holding up during the current global economy "scare"...

I agree.

As much as it might be difficult to discuss the Economy - and in particular, the effect of the current recession on the profession - without alluding to politics and political causes, I think its highly unlikely that any politics-centric discussion can be go on for very long before degrading into some kind of a flame war and shouting match that gets personal and possibly insulting, since a lot of people feel very passionately and strongly on either side of the aisle.

We've seen it happen in other forums, there's no reason to believe it will not happen here as well.

There is a huge difference between discussing "political issues" current events and opinions and the politics and socialization of architecture. While I agree that some heated debates could evolve from opening the forum to such issues, it could easily happen just as much if we decided to debate the social aspects of Daniel Libeskind designs in traditional neighbourhoods. Such a discussion could be called "politics".

We are creatures of the social world and architecture is as much as political subject as health care. We might need to step softly but we need to walk the path nonetheless. Having a discussion about the path might be very helpful.

Insofar as politics directly affects our practice and the uses of our tools (such as official adoption of BIM, DWF standards in Portugal, etc.) these are clearly appropriate topics for discussion here. Getting into more general causes and effects of policy, particularly along partisan and ideological lines, belongs elsewhere. (And god knows there are plenty of venues.)
