I think it would be easier to achieve this look, if you're rendering, using a normal map channel in your texture.
I do not think it is possible to model it as flat with a morph then curve it along the length of the chair... I would probably model it as it is in plan with a morph, then elevate the top of the backrest. The front edge would then be filleted to create the soft edge and a texture as mentioned above applied to that.
