Just a quick opinion question about roofs...

I've always ended up exploding my drawings, or making 2D details to add a lot of well... detail.. to my drawings, but in my new quest to really make the most of BIM I'm wondering what type of techniques other people are using to create accurate, correctly modelled roofs for instance... whats the best way to model roof "details" such as fascia boards, frieze boards, drip edge's.. etc, I'm working on a house right now that I'm happy to say is entirely modelled, and is nearing the point were a complete set of CD's could be pulled from it with no 2d work at all (this may not be a big deal to anyone else, but it's been a huge challenge for me) The Roof and it's corresponding details seem to be the most difficult thing for me to model, I've used the "joist" object a lot for adding detail, but I'm just wondering what other methods people out there are using.

With CadImage's Accessory pack you can add all this information (and more) almost automatically. Roof material, fascias, soffits, spouting, downpipes. I have not explored it fully yet, but simple buildings seem to work well, something more complicated might take a little tweaking.

I've been interested in checking that add-on out since I first started using ArchiCAD, maybe I should persuade my boss to buy it for me

PS: I'm really surprised at how few responses this thread has gotten, it makes me wonder if it's because people just haven't had the time to respond, or if it's because no one really takes the time to model things out like this?!

i do alot of roof edge modeling. what i do is cut the main roof off at the edge of he exterior wall. then create another archicad roof usually thinner from eterior wall edge out to facia board that is a slab if vertical. then soffits ect. all in archicad slabs. then say for rakes i make what i can out of the roof tool. then for mouldings at an angle i use archiforma. this is where it gets tedious.

this is why i am considering buying objective. so i can rotate a shape in the section window. this would be so liberating for detail modeling.

to me that one feature - the ability to rotate things in the section window, to beable to work more in the section window -would be worth more than the past 3 upgrades put together.

its interesting to me that graphisoft emphasis' modeling and the BIM advantage but the past series of upgrades have done nothing other than open GL that i can remember or use to really advance this cause. the lightworks addition helps with the rendering aspects but not the actual modeling itself. What i am interested in is actual advances in the physical modeling.

Thanks for the reply, I've never thought about drawing multiple roofs to achieve the roof edge detail, I'll have to try that technique out. I really don't understand why you cannot rotate objects in sections/elevations, its incredibly irritating, and you also cannot drag a copy.

I also use "Multiple Roofs". We do not do too many Flat (Horizontal) Soffits, So even if I have a Soffit it is a Roof.

After creating the Roof I create a copy of the Roof, place it on a new layer3D Fascia (make sure it is the copy that you are moving due to any SEO operations that may be linked to the original roof.) From there the size and edge angles are modified to represent fascia Size and angles. Also Original roof and Fascia roof are selected and aligned in 3d Window.

I wish I did not have to do this, but efforts with 3D profiler made me frustrated. I am also very interested in Objectives. GS just need to buy the rights and add it to the Software package.

The attached image, is has a Plumb Fascia (again not that common here), but the Truss Pro object tail is Square cut. This is usually not a problem since the common method of fascia is square.
