One thing I have started to do is to immediately save the plan to an archive (pla) and import/link to PM from this and not the pln, it has seemed to load and update a bit quicker and I have not experienced BGAC updating without the libraries nor have I gotten the message that the "project is currently opened blah, blah, blah...". When I make changes to the pln I just save as an archive again and overwrite the original pla. It has also helped in the portability of the project as well. Macros can still be an issue with some objects but the more you become familiar with your libraries it isn't that big of an issue.

it's a BGarchiCAD issue with library parts and network paths from what i can make out.
helpful workaround from graphisoft:
put a copy of the libraries you are using into the archiCAD application folder/directory.
if libraries cannot be found for a project, archiCAD and BGarchiCAD both look for library in two default locations. the first is the folder in which the project file is stored, the second is the archiCAD application folder, but it can only use one of these places at a time!. (i.e you cannot have one library in one folder, one in the other and archiCAD/BGarchiCAD find them both - all the libraries have to be in one place).
this is a workaround: the libraries will not update automatically as they do with archiCAD's in-build 'cache library' handling. you have to manually update these library copies if you have made changes to them.
