Tom,
The problem is that once I put the fill in place, the lines behind it won't disappear in section. As I said, I can use fills as masks just fine in plan, but in section the target lines remain visible.
I keep thinking that it is a view depth issue, but I have tried changing the view depth with no luck. Empty fill, solid fill, transparent background, window color background, display options....nothing seems to work in section.
Perhaps a step-by-step listing of the proper settings would help.

Make sure you are bringing the fills forward, not sending the model lines back.

Tom,
Thanks. That appears to have done it, although I couldn't just bring the fill "forward". I had to bring it to the front. I love the subtle nuances of this software.
