Max Polygons?

Does anyone have an idea of what the max reasonable or recommended number of polygons should be for any one model?

I am working on a big project. In 3d window ı can not see my whole poject.(not enogh memory). I have contact with tecnical support.
They told me,
Mostly it depends on ram.
second graphic card and other hard ware.

ı have 2 gig ram 256 mg nvidia My computer can handle 2,550,000 poligon in AC 10.

Artlantis 4.6 can handle max 7,500,000 poligons.

ı buy 2 gig more ram and 512 atı .
I will see the difference:)

It might depend on your 3D window settings. Try setting it to OpenGL without edges, shadows and transparency. It should work.

The RAM the tech support is reffering to, in this case, is the video card RAM.

Just like to add an experience I had for those following this thread.

At an office I am not currently woking at we had a notebook with 256MB RAM and a 256MB Graphics card as well as a Desktop with 1GB RAM with a 256MB Graphics card.

One particularly large project, A club of about 10000m2 over four levels with furniture, would display on the desktop in OpenGL but not on the Notebook.

The Notebook would get stuck while generating the 3D window, leading me to believe that you need enough RAM for ArchiCAD to convert a model to OpenGL even before you consider the RAM required on the Graphics Card itself.

Fair enough observation.

Executing the GDL script in Archicad to realize a model [real RAM]is a different task from displaying and navigating in that model [OpenGL RAM].

But I suspect disk space nixed you. What are the numbers on that?

I try to get the 3D to save in ATL. So it depend on the real RAM. Navigatin in 3D is not necessary for me. So I use internal engine in wire frame mode which use less RAM than open GL and enough for ARTLANTIS.

Also there is a difference in which GDL object you use. If I use an object in Ac Library I get 5,500,000 polygons. If use my self made object I can get 2,500,000 polygons so I think type of the GDL script affect the calculation and RAM.

Oh, that is simple. Just look away into the empty space when you open the 3D window. The model will be saved anyway.

If you need to keep Archicad cameras, set the path, save the model from the Walkthrough dialog box.
