Have your mesh selected. Use the polygonal geometry method and double click inside the mesh where you want the point.

Tried that over and over with no result. The only place I could create a hot spot is around the perimeter of the mesh.

Click on the mesh button and make it active.
Hold down shift and select the mesh you want to place the hot spot in.
Draw a line (in action only, don't select the line tool) or double click a spot in the mesh and a dialog that asks about ridges should pop up.
That should do it.
