Modeling a Rustic Branch Railing

Anyone have any tips or ideas on how to model a rustic branch railing? Something similar to the included photo.

How nice do you need it? If you are only using it for elevations and CD"s then I would use a complex profile to generate the form. If you need it for a 3D rendering, then this won't work too well.

For 3D, make a texture with alpha channel.

Do you need make it with ArchiCAD only?
What software do you need to use in renderings of it? Can you use displacement maps?
What views will you need of it?
Does it need to be per code?
