Orbit mode

Stephen Dolbee

I am trying to get used to navigating in 3d with V10. I like it, but don't understand the orbit mode. It seems that the target point should remain the same in orbit mode, but it doesn't. Hard to understand what makes it change. Does anyone know?

Thanks,
Steve

I haven't taken the time to figure to out since it seems to just work the way I want it to. It has to change when you pan the view, otherwise it could get really wacky. I guess that it is at the center of the current view and perhaps its distance from the viewer is determined by the perspective settings, but that wouldn't work in axon. It's kind of like anything to do with computers, as long as it works I don't need to know any more.

It orbits differently depending on which mode you are using.

For axonometric mode, it orbits around the center of the model.

For the perspective mode, it centers around the camera target. This is very easy to see if you have your Navigator Preview visible and set to real-time zoom. You can even move the target inside the Navigator preview to make sure it is positioned where you want.

The thing to remember with either method is that if you pan or zoom in the 3D window, you are moving your view away from your orbit centre point. So you may need to zoom extents again to reset it, but this is made much easier in AC10 by double clicking your mouse wheel button.

I love being able to remain in edit mode and then holding shift and the mousewheel to orbit. It really is super friendly!
