That would work.
Or use the Marquee tool.
You might find that a little easier to place in the correct location.
The cutting planes are either "near enough is good enough" when placing or you need to know the exact x,y,z co-ordinates.

you didn't mention whether you need to do this just for a 3d view or also to produce 2d drawing. if the latter, the 3d document tool lets you add notation/text/dimensions etc as well as hatching. Set up the view in the 3d window (using either cutplanes or marquee too as mentioned above) and then Document Menu>3d Document>Create.
