What does Fly mode do in 3D explore?

I'm just using the 3D explore mode in ARCHICAD. I can see the little button on the button left of my screen get toggled on and off when I hit "F" but it doesn't seem to change anything with my exploring - I am still able to fly around and crash into things.

What does the Fly mode actually do?

When fly mode is off you will be locked at a constant height.
You can look up or down and move forward but you will only move forward.

When fly mode is on and you look up and move forward you will move up and forward at the same time.
i.e. your height will change as well.
