I tend to use these alignment "lines", not sure about their actual name, to assist in lining up objects in 3d. [be sure to check the 2nd box] By selecting the object you wish to move by the selection dot point you wish to align it with you can snap, in essence, to that point, be it horizontal, vertical whatever. This does not eliminate the need to check yourself in 2d or elevation, even from the 3d window.
Play with this a little as well and it can speed things up some.............
