I managed to select only previously drawn circles or ellipses, but not polygonal shapes.

You can do it without a problem.
For that you need to use magic wand function (use space bar). Draw your shell, locate your polylines that shows needed openings on the shell, click with right mouse button on shell, select from drop-down menu "create hole in shell", press space bar and click on the polyline.
